Fire Alarm Plan Review Overview Class

April 12 & 13

08:00-12:00hrs. 

This course will provide attendees with the critical concepts of reviewing fire alarm systems to ensure compliance with the International Building/Fire Code and NFPA 72. Concepts that will be discussed include:

  • Documentation and what should be identified on the submittal drawings,
  • Interfacing fire alarm with automatic sprinkler systems,
  • Battery and voltage drop calculations,
  • Proper installation criteria for initiating devices and notification appliances,
  • Criteria for when and how emergency voice alarm communication systems should be installed, and
  • Compliant vs. noncompliant methods for transmitting fire alarm and sprinkler waterflow signals to a central, proprietary, or remote station service.

Participants should have their locally adopted building/fire code accessible for reference, along with NFPA 72 and NFPA 13 for the class.

About the Instructor:

John Swanson began his career with the National Fire Sprinkler Association in November 2021. He currently serves as NFSA’s Codes and Standards Specialist. In this role he provides training and education and represents NFSA on codes and standards technical committees. In 2002, John was hired as a Deputy State Fire Marshal – Plans Examiner/Inspector with the Minnesota State Fire Marshal Division where he served for 20 years. Before joining the Minnesota State Fire Marshal Division, John served 8 years as a Firefighter with the City of Lakeville, MN. He has been a Principal member of the NFPA 72 – National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code Technical Committee since 2012 and is a past member of the International Building Code (IBC) Fire Safety Committee and International Fire Code (IFC) Interpretation Committee. Since 2015, John has served as a contract instructor and subject matter expert for the International Code Council (ICC) where he is often called upon by ICC to create and review IFC related content and materials. In 2013, Minnesota Governor, Mark Dayton appointed John as a fire service representative to a 4-year term on the Minnesota Board of Architecture and Engineering.
